When and How to Contact A Delegate

When and How to Contact a Delegate

Delegates are nurses like you. Most work full-time. It's not always possible to break away from their unit on a moment's notice. Things you should consider:

  • Give the Union as much notice as possible to a pending meeting. Most meetings that the Hospital demand on short notice and deem urgent, are not. Most meetings can be delayed by a few hours or can even be scheduled for a future day. If you are having trouble finding a delegate on the contact then you should call the NYPNU office, 212-988-5565.
  • Do not call a delegate at home. Many problems can arise from a delegate trying to handle a case from home. It's best to leave the grievances and issues for the delegates in the hospital. When there are less time constraints, you can always wait for when a particular delegate is scheduled to be at the hospital.

When to Use the Delegate Contact List:

  • To discuss any and all grievances. In order to have an idea of what may qualify as a grievance, read and be familiar with the contract.
  • If a manager asks to meet with you to discuss a grievance, a delegate should be present.
  • If any manager asks to meet with you in reference to an investigation which could lead to disciplinary action, a delegate should be present (it's your right under federal law - but it's up to you to demand your rights).
  • Even if a meeting is already in progress and you sense that the direction of the agenda is changing to something that could lead to disciplinary action, you have the right to stop the meeting and get a delegate.
