May staffing violation reports
MAY STAFFING VIOLATIONS
When you submit a staffing violation report, NYPNU staff use this data to identify and report on short-staffing trends throughout LHH, MEETH, and LHGV. We also update NYPNU delegates at our monthly meetings.
Based on the data you provided, here's what RN staffing looked like in May:
Not sure what you're looking at? Here's how to interpret this infographic. As you can see, the square for each date is split diagonally. The top left triangle represents day shift; the bottom right triangle represents night shift. Each unit that reported any RN staffing violation (including ratio/staffing standards, lack of CSN/charge, missed break, and mandatory OT) is listed in the corresponding shift triangle. Any shift with even one violation is highlighted red; if a shift is gray, that means no violations were reported on that shift.
Look at May 1st as an example. 8 East was the only unit who reported a violation on day shift. On night shift, 6 Uris and Transition both reported violations.
Take a moment to find all the shifts that your unit reported a staffing violation. Does this reflect your experience?
Make sure to report every staffing violation on every shift. This is how we can monitor and work to enforce staffing. We don't know what's not reported.
$2,000 LONG-TERM INCENTIVE FOR 9 EAST/LACHMAN
Staff RNs on 9 East/Lachman have been reporting unsafe staffing levels for months. We're pleased to share the hospital has formally notified us that they have enacted long-term surge incentive pay - a $2,000 bonus.
WHAT
Our contract provides for long-term surge incentive pay. You receive an additional $2,000 bonus (on top of any applicable OT rate) if you sign up for 7 extra shifts within the 13-week period. Three of these shifts must be on the weekend.
New to the 2021 contract - if the hospital cancels any of these 7 shifts, you will still receive the full $2,000, not a pro-rated amount.
However, if you cancel any of these 7 shifts, you will not receive any incentive pay - not even a pro-rated amount.
WHO
9 East/Lachman
Full-time, part-time, and per diems are eligible.
WHEN
The 13-week period is effective this Sunday, June 5th through September 3rd.
Again, you must sign up for 7 additional shifts within this time period, 3 of which must be on the weekend.
You will receive the full $2,000 (less any taxes or other withholdings) at the end of this 13-week period.
HOW
You must sign up for long-term surge shifts through the nursing office: 212-434-2210. Don't simply tell your manager or you will lose out on your $2,000!
Again, please continue to report any short-staffing on your unit! We rely on this data to demonstrate patterns of short-staffing, which we then use to pressure the hospital to utilize the incentive pay provided by our contract.
$200 EPISODIC SHIFT OPPORTUNITIES
In addition to the long-term surge incentive, our contract also provides for episodic surge incentive, which is an extra $200 (on top of any applicable overtime).
We're no longer sending out text alerts when episodic shifts are being offered. Instead, we created a page our website. We'll keep this current as the hospital gives us new information. So check regularly for updates. New staffing needs have been announced for this weekend.
